Shayal Singh was beyond surprised when she was named the 2020 Rishikul Sanatan College dux yesterday. She credited her teachers and friends for helping her.
She said she was excited to leave her final year in school with the dux award.
“I am lost for words, but I can say that my parents are so proud of me today,” she said.
She was honoured to be selected as the school dux.
“This would not be possible without my teachers and my friends who have helped me in all my difficult times,” she said.
Shayal who also scooped awards for the highest marks in maths and accounting, was named the Best Arts student and scooped the first prize award.
She aims to study computing science and mathematics next year at the University of the South Pacific and hopes to become a software developer.
Parents reminded of need for discipline
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Itendra Nair, while officiating at the Rishikul Sanatan College annual awards day, said parents and guardians must instill discipline in their children.
The Acting DCP advised parents that students will do their part if parents fulfill their responsibilities and support them in their schoolwork.
“The more time that is spent on educating and supporting your child’s school work, the more likely they are going to become successful citizens in the future. As a parent, now is the time to invest in children and keep encouraging them to do their best,” he said.
The Acting DCP also advised students to stay away from illegal activities and be wary of bad influences because it would spoil their future.
