Starting 2021 today in election mode, the Social Democratic Liberal Party aims to fundraise $1.5 million to contest the 2022 general election.

Party Leader Viliame Gavoka said for the 2018 election the party had a budget below $1m.

About 18 months away from the next election, he said they were confident that they could do better than that.

“We can do more than a million dollars,” Mr Gavoka said.

Despite everything that has happened within the party, he said SODELPA was still the most recognised party in Fiji.

They plan to approach the election under the Turf Control Model as opposed to the Rockstar Model which they tried in 2018 and failed.

Plans by the party include the introduction of free tertiary education across the board, removal of the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme and changing the social welfare payments from monthly to fortnightly.

“There is a lot of waste in the Fijian Government. We have identified areas that we can cut back on. The wastage in infrastructure is also quite frightening we will be controlling that better,” he claimed.

“We have spent billions on infrastructure, roads. We can do better. We can half it, get a better result and channel it to education.”

Mr Gavoka also stated that the party was served with two writs.

The first one was filed in the Lautoka High Court by Taitusi Rasoki, Ilaitia Bavadra and Filise Matabogi while the second writ was filed in the Suva High Court by Jone Rayawa.
