Tacirua Transport Bus Involved In Accident Found Unroadworthy By LTA

The Tacirua Transport Limited bus that ran away and ploughed into a house yesterday has been inspected by the Land Transport Authority of Fiji (LTA) and found to be unroadworthy.

“We found the bus’s mechanical handbrake was inoperative, which is a serious failure of Tacirua Transport’s maintenance system,” said LTA CEO, Samuel Simpson.

“Furthermore, the driver failed to carry out any pre-service checks before taking the bus on the road – an essential safety measure to ensure the safety and security of the passengers you are carrying.”

Mr Simpson said that incidents like these were the primary reason the Authority established these rules and guidelines in the first place.

“Our first and foremost commitment is to the safety of Fijians. It is exceedingly irresponsible for a bus operator to allow an unroadworthy vehicle on the road. No one has the right to play with the lives of Fijians because of sheer negligence, or an unwillingness to spend time and money.

“All public service operators owe it to their passengers, as well as the general public, to properly maintain their vehicles and take all the necessary safety requirements seriously.”

LTA has issued Tacirua Transport Limited with a ‘defect order’ which they are required to comply with before the bus is permitted to be operated on the road again.

LTA was established to provide a safe land transport system for the nation in partnership with stakeholders, the Fijian Government and the community.
