The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is hoping to receive more than 50, 000 doses in the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines by April this year.

This was revealed by Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete yesterday.

Dr Waqainabete said the ministry was working with digitalFIJI on the vaccination registration for the vaccinated population once the vaccines are rolled out.

“The vaccines will arrive in batches and the first batch that will arrive within the first quarter of this year. We are hoping to get more than 50,000 doses,” he said.

“We are working with digitalFIJI on the digital registration of Fijians above the age of 18, as you may be aware when we had the measles outbreak we had some countries from around the world who wanted some form of certification that those who were coming from Fiji were vaccinated.

“That’s why we have seen the need to run a digital platform for registering.”

He said the important thing to understand was that every country had to identify its risk population.

“In countries where they have community transmission, it’s already in the community, and the risk population is the most vulnerable. For us, the risk is not in the community; it’s in the border and they are the ones likely to get COVID-19. So our approach will be different.”

Acting World Health Organisation Representative to the Pacific Dr Akeem Ali said Fiji was in the final stage of completing processes for the initial allocation of vaccines from the COVAX facility.
