Residents of Vatamai Settlement in Lovu, Lautoka have expressed their grievances over the four-day water cut in their area.

Katarina Nalewe said they had been facing water cuts from Thursday and until yesterday, they had been drinking from rainwater.

“We’ve just been collecting rainwater, but we constantly need water for washing and the toilet so now our clothes and dishes are piled up. We have to ration the rainwater,” she said.

She added that there was a stream nearby but it was not safe.

“Animals bath there like cows and bullocks and if we drink from there, we will get sick,” she said.

“I emailed the Water Authority; they came to check, and they went back saying they were still looking for the valve or the pump.”

Another resident, Mohammed Saneem, said the settlement was a 15 minutes’ walk from the Buabua water treatment plant.

“We only live three kilometres from the city and 15 minutes from the Buabua catchment plant but still we are facing water cuts.”

He said concerns were also raised regarding the low water pressure.

“We need water, kids are going to school, others are going to work. We have been lucky that it has been raining these past few days, but who knows how long this rain season would last,” he said.

“We want to get a solution, when bills are not paid, they disconnect very quickly but what happens now? Our children need clean water.”

He added that about 14 families, close to 50 people, were affected by the water issue in the settlement.

Questions have been sent to the Water Authority of Fiji regarding the issue. There was no response when this edition went to print last night.
