The Lautoka Golf Club raised $5200 towards the rebuilding phase after Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

It was handed it over to the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Rosy Akbar last Saturday.

Design Engineering managing director and the Lautoka Football Association president, Abdul Khaiyum Rafiq gave an additional $1000 for the donation.

Ms Akbar said: “I am glad that this organisation is leading the way.

“I am sure there are other sporting bodies out there who will want to follow suit and we welcome their generosity which will go towards Cylone Yasa and Ana.

“I can assure you that every dollar that is raised through the goodness of your heart will go back towards helping our needy families,” Ms Akbar said.

She said construction works for Lekutu Secondary School, Yadua Island District School and Bua District School was expected to begin this week.

Lautoka Golf Club chairperson Raymond Singh said the money was raised during weekly competitions.

“Our golfers decided to do this to help the disadvantaged, especially those who were severely affected by Cyclone Yasa,” he said.

“Our golfers hope this can bring an extra smile to these people’s faces, especially the children.

“What makes this handover special is that she is the first female government minister to grace the Lautoka Golf Club.”

Mr Singh said the club was built on family values and this was what pushed them to fundraise.
