“Keeping focussed and a vision of qualifying for the quarterfinal is needed for every member of the squad, management and administration. That is solidarity and belief.”

The Flying Fijians must perform and win every pool game if they are to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

This was the view of Flying Fijians head coach Vern Cotter after the 2023 RWC fixtures were made known last weekend.

The Fijians take on Triple Crown champions Wales in their Pool C opener at Bordeaux on September 10 followed by their clash against Australia in Saint-Etienne on September 17.

After a 13-day rest, the Flying Fijians take on Europe’s top qualifier on September 30 in Bordeaux and end their campaign on October 8 in Toulouse.

“There will be a real focus and excitement to start the competition against Wales,” Cotter said from New Zealand.

“Many consider this to be an advantage having Wales in the pool but they have shown great pride recently in securing the Triple Crown by beating England, Scotland and Ireland, this will be a big start followed by Australia.

“The danger is not to focus on every game, believing some games will be easier than others, this is an illusion. We know we must perform and win every game.”

Cotter said this mindset will not be the responsibility of the 15 players but of everyone in the selected squad pushed on by passionate supporters.

“Keeping focussed and a vision of qualifying for the quarterfinal is needed for every member of the squad, management and administration. That is solidarity and belief.”

This was the same sort of attitude shown by the Japan rugby side during their 2019 RWC. They won all the pool games beating Tier One nations Ireland 22-19 and Scotland 28-21. Japan also claimed wins over Samoa 38-19 and Russia 30-10.
