COVID-19 Vaccines Arrive Today

The first batch of the AstraZeneca vaccines that will help efforts to fight COVID-19 will arrive today.

The 12,000 shots will be administered to 6000 frontline workers, with each receiving two shots within a period of four to 12 weeks.

This was confirmed by Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Dr James Fong yesterday.

Dr Fong said Fiji obtained AstraZeneca vaccines through the World Health Organisation’s COVAX Facility.

He said priority, as widely reported, was for frontline workers because they were at a high risk of getting the virus.

“We are only having border quarantine cases and our frontline workers are at high risk of getting the virus so that is why we are counting them as a priority right now.

The World Health Organisation has reported that the vaccines have an 82.4 per cent effectiveness rate in preventing individuals from contracting COVID-19.

Additionally, the preliminary trial of the vaccine have been shown to protect against the new coronavirus variants.

Training

Meanwhile, in Nadi yesterday, frontline workers underwent a COVID-19 vaccination administering training at Tanoa International Hotel.

Leading the training is head of Family Health, Dr Rachael Devi.
