Cargo vessel Capitaine Magellan has changed its port rotation for Fiji/Kiribati/Tuvalu service route.

Neptune Pacific Direct Line Pte, Ltd announced the change because of yard congestion currently faced in Funafuti, Tuvalu.

Funafuti Port
In Tuvalu, where there are no domestic flights, marine transportation is the lifeline that supports virtually the entire population of the nation.

In a Basic Design Study Report on the Project for Improvement of Funafuti Port in Tuvalu, it found that cargo-handling activities at the port were exposed to various obstacles.

The report highlighted that such obstacles included the restrictions of the allowable cargo weight per container to 18 tons and a lack of port cargo-handling equipment.

Neptune Pacific Direct Line Pte at the request of the Tuvaluan authorities, made changes to the port rotation for the Fiji/Kiribati/Tuvalu service.

Sailing under the flag of Singapore, cargo vessel Capitaine Magellan was built in 2009 with a carrying capacity of 9793 T DWT.

This vessel sailed to Funafuti Port last week on September 17 and departed two days later on September 19.

Vessel Call To Fiji
Capitaine Magellan frequently makes its monthly sail to Fiji’s Suva and Lautoka ports to offload general cargo.

Last month the vessel made two trips to Lautoka Port on August 6 and second trip on August 24.

Similarly, two trips were made to Port of Suva, first on August 9 and second on August 28.

This month, Capitaine Magellan was expected to arrive at Lautoka Port on September 3 after sailing from Tarawa Port, Kiribati.

However, it was delayed to September 7.

After departing Lautoka Port, it then sailed to Suva port and arrived on September 9 to offload cargo.

Fiji Ports Terminal Limited head of corporate services Salesh Kumar said vessel called to both ports had been steady despite the pandemic.
