Labasa College students, Rupeni Dobui and Hritish Pawan, believe getting vaccinated is a responsibility that they have to perform for the betterment of the country.

Rupeni, an Year 11 student, said the faster the student population (ages 15-17) gets vaccinated, the better chances they have of returning to their normal school lives.

The 17-year-old said he took the jab after gaining information on the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine from trusted Government websites and advices given to him by his parents and educated relatives.

His grandmother, Adi Masinivuya, said she had encouraged all 15 to 17-year-old children in her family not to miss the opportunity to receive the life-saving vaccine.

“I was proud of my grandson. Despite his tender age, he was able to understand the severity of the virus and why vaccination was critical for the recovery of our nation,” Ms Masinivuya said.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student, Hritish said the jab was an important life decision that he never regretted saying yes to.

“I called my friends right away and told them to get vaccinated together as we had a chance to safeguard our lives, families and the different communities we lived in,” he said.

His father, Prem Kumar, said when he heard the news that students now had a chance to also get vaccinated, he was delighted and reassured that the health of his family could now be safeguarded.

“I was thinking that only my wife and myself would be fully vaccinated and feared that my children would remain vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus,” Mr Kumar said.
