Residents of Nanuku Settlement in Vatuwaqa are still reeling from shock after a stabbing incident claimed the life of a Naitasiri woman on Sunday night.

The deceased who was in her early 20’s was commonly known as Laite to her in-laws and Neighbours. She was stabbed multiple times by her 40-year-old partner following a drunk dispute over money.

Eyewitness Milika Tinanisautu says the couple were drinking alcohol until Sunday morning before the incident happened.

“They were drinking yesterday (Sunday) morning and went to sleep at about 10am. After he slept, Laite took some money from him and went to drink with some other boys at Nakelo Street,” Ms Tinanisautu said.

“When my uncle woke up around 3pm he saw that Laite was missing along with the money. That’s when he went out to look for her.”

After he found her where she was drinking, Ms Tamanisautu said he beat her up there before taking her home where he continued to physically assault her.

“I went to their house to stop the fight, when I told him that what he was doing is against the law he said it’s none of my business and that it was a domestic dispute between them,” she said.

“He was angry that she took money from him to go and drink alcohol.

“I went to the bathroom to see Laite and she was bleeding all over. I was scared because it was the first time for me to see something like that.

“I ran out to look for my husband to help her and when I went to the roundabout, I saw the Police and alerted them to the incident.”

Laite’s aunt Mere Fong remembers her as a quiet and calm person who did not speak out much.

“Every time I would pass by their house, she would call me to have tea or lunch. She was such a beautiful soul who will be dearly missed.”

Police confirmed that Laite passed away late Sunday night allegedly because of injuries sustained.

A post mortem will be conducted to ascertain cause of death as investigations continue.
