The inability of Opposition parties to have a consistent position on vaccination was called out in Parliament yesterday.

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum pointed out that while SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka was telling people to vaccinate, his own parliamentarian Mitieli Bulanauca was telling people not to vaccinate and to rely on God.

“The opposition have been sitting on that side of the house, spreading lies about vaccines and fueling negativity about how people should not get vaccinated,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“They were obnoxiously pushing for hard lockdowns, so that the economic ruins are even deeper, so the opposition for their political mileage can blame that on Government.

“They did not shy away from blaming the unfortunate COVID-19 deaths of Fijians on the Government. How hypocritical can you get? How dare you turn the deaths of your fellow Fijians into a political football? They should be ashamed about this, Mr Speaker Sir.

“Sir, Fiji’s vaccine rollout has been nothing short of phenomenal. We have fully vaccinated 90.6 per cent of eligible Fijians and we urge those few who are yet to get their jabs to please do so with urgency.

“”We have the necessary border control checks, even to deal with Omicron, and measures that will support the safe and much needed reopening of our borders. Our health personnel are ready to combat the virus should it make its way into Fiji.”

“Mr Speaker Sir, Fiji needs to open its borders for economic recovery and get back Fijians to jobs. I was fortunate to be in Nadi yesterday to see the tourists coming in after almost 20 months. The euphoria and the confidence that I saw yesterday was very pleasing. We are on a path to recovery now.”
