Vendor, Council Staff Member Front Court Over Bribery Charges

A business licencing officer and a market vendor were produced in the Magistrates Court in Suva on Tuesday charged with bribery.

It is alleged that on January 28, 2021 Atish Ashneel Chand a market vendor offered Simione Verenakadavu $50 as an inducement to or reward to perform a duty in his capacity as a Nausori Town Council business licencing officer.

Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption lawyer Sanjana Datt said first phase disclosures had been served.

Magistrate Sherlyn Kiran released them on $1000 each non-cash bail, ordered them not to re-offend while on bail, surrender all travel documents and not to apply for any new travel documents.

Furthermore, Chand was told to report to the Nakasi Police Station on the last Friday of every month while Verenakadavu will report to the Nabua Police Station on the last Friday of every month.

They have both been ordered to reside at their fixed residential addresses and not to relocate without prior approval from the court.

A stop departure order was also issued against them.

The case has been adjourned to January 26, 2022 for mention.
