Team Fiji men’s rugby 7s team captain Waisea Nacuqu believes they have to go back to doing the basics right before they could focus on their next assignment.

The Votua, Ba, native made the comment when the team arrived home at Nadi International Airport on Thursday night.

This was after they won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. A disappointing outing as the star-studded Fijian side was walloped 31-7 by South Africa in the final.

Nacuqu understood the criticisms coming from fans as they have not won the Commonwealth Games gold medal and will now have to wait for another four years.

He said there are lots of work to be done before the USA Sevens tournament in Los Angeles on August 27 – 28.

“True we did not reach our ultimate goal to win gold in the final, the boys gave their best,” Nacuqu said

“We learned from our mistakes to play better in the World Cup 7s and the Los Angeles leg. We’ll work as a team. We also have to follow up with the ball when we are on attack. We made mistakes in the final on our restarts. We have to go back and work on it.”

Nacuqu scored Fiji’s winning try in the 19-14 win over New Zealand in the semifinal.

“It was sudden death and I gave my life to go to score that try,” he said.

Nacuqu on his captaincy role thanked the assistance of senior players like Josua Vakurinabili, Jerry Tuwai, Sevuloni Moceinacagi, Tevita Daugunu and Semi Kunatani.
