Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) provisional candidate Pita Waqavonovono wants to put an end to student debt.

Mr Waqavonovono was announced last Friday as SODELPA provisional candidate for the upcoming election. He believes the current mechanisms to fund those in higher education institutions were inadequate.

“We need to talk about making Fiji tertiary education free. Critical and rapid changes are needed to provide this generation with universal, free and quality education. It’s also time to skill as many Fijians as we can and find them good jobs,” he said.

“I have dedicated much of my work to speaking about ending student debt, making tertiary education free and finding jobs for our young people. I don’t see that changing.”

He also said he applied for a ticket to stand with SODELPA in the elections to end the systemic inequalities, injustices and inbuilt discrimination in the country.

“There’s a need for a government that encourages its citizens through incentive, rather than putting limits on people through the punishing disincentives of burdensome taxes,” he claimed.

“In those most basic freedoms of parliamentary democracy – the freedom of thought, worship, speech and association.”

“In equal opportunity for all Fijians; and the encouragement and facilitation of wealth so that all may enjoy the highest possible standards of living, health, education and social justice.”

“In ending student debts, making tertiary education free and getting jobs for Fijians who are capable,” he said.

He said SODELPA believed in individual freedom and free enterprise, and had never wavered from that fact.

“I have been in Social Democratic Liberal Party since its inception. In fact, I was a member of Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) after the coup in 2006,” he said.

“What draws me into Social Democratic Liberal Party is the party’s fight to inalienable rights and freedoms of all peoples.”

“Especially, the rights of the iTaukei. It is the only party that speaks up for the rights of the iTaukei and other marginalised groups.”
