We must be inclusive and able to learn from each other for the betterment of our lives, our communities and our society.

This statement was made by Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, during the International Youth Day celebration at the Suva Civic Center on Friday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said every generation had either a set of opportunities or a set of problems.

He said in Fiji 70 per cent of the entire population were below the age of 40 while 65 per cent were below the age of 65.

“It is our ability to be able to learn from those challenges or those opportunities both in the past and the present that will be able to address today’s problems.

“If we are able to get on that common platform, then we will be able to address many of the issues and many of the challenges that we face today.”

The theme for this year’s International Youth Day is Intergenerational Solidarity.

United Nations Resident Coordinator, Jan Nemeck said: “Your generation has more information and powers on your fingertips than previously thought possible.

“I urge you to use this power for the benefit of all of us to make positive, long-lasting change in your communities, your countries and even on a global scale.”
