Twenty eight Vunisea Secondary School athletes arrived in Suva on Friday for the Coca-Cola Games at the HFC Bank Stadium.

This year’s Coke Games start Thursday and will conclude on Saturday.

“This is the biggest number we have brought across for the annual and much anticipated event,” teacher and middle distance coach Josua Lesubula said.

VSS is the only secondary school from Kadavu participating in the Games.

Their relay runners were on the Laucala tracks on Saturday for their 4×100 and 4×400 time trials.

“We are aiming to go back with some medals,” Lesubula said.

“We participated in Saturday’s trials to acclimatize the sub junior grades to the Games atmosphere

“We usually get not more than 20 athletes every year, this is the biggest number so far,” he added.

They do not have athletes in the senior grade.

“Students in the senior grade did not meet the qualifying times.

“These athletes train in a 300 meters track at school, we came on Friday straight to the stadium the next day to acclimatize the athletes on the 400 meters track.

The athletes have been training together for about four weeks.

Meanwhile Adi Maopa Secondary athletes from Vanuabalavu in Lau are expected in tonight.

Tickets for the grandstand have been on sale since Thursday while tickets for the embankment will be sold on the Cokes day.

Almost 3000 athletes have been confirmed to participate in the three-day Fiji Finals.

About 137 schools are expected to be part of the Games.

Coca-Cola Games will start on Thursday
