The Rooster Chicken Fijiana XVs squad flies out to New Zealand early Sunday morning to prepare for their opening game of the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

This was after their 24-7 loss to world’s number three ranked team Canada at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on Friday night.

The Sereima Leweniqila captained-side is currently ranked number 21 in the world.

Head coach Senirusi Seruvakula said they have taken out a lot of learning from the Canada match and would try and improve before their opening World Cup match against England.

The Fijians stood tall as they defended desperately to hold Canada 0-0 at halftime. The visitors however, dominated the scrums.

“We made a lot of mistakes and we need to iron that out and get ready for tougher opponents.

“Some decisions made were not up to par, which gave Canada chances to dominate and score tries.”
The World Cup is on October 8 to November 12 and Fijiana is in Pool C with England, France and South Africa.

They play England in their World Cup opener at Eden Park, Auckland, on October 8.

A mistake by the Fijiana players at the start of the second half saw Canada run through their opening try, by Sara Kaljuve.

Their joy was short-lived when Fijiana centre Sesenieli Donu broke clear and delivered a pass to Akanisi Sokoiwasa to score their try with Lavena Cavuru landing the conversation.

Canada took control of the match and scored two more tries to seal the win.
