Early Screening Important For Children: Heart Surgeon

An overseas paediatric cardiologist says, a lot of Fijian children they have operated on had no symptoms of a heart defect until they were screened.
Dr Ashishkumar Banpurkar is a doctor at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital from Mumbai in India.
He is a member of the medical team who are in the country conducting surgeries on nine children at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital in Nasese.
Dr Banpurkar said it was important for parents and guardians to always have their children get check-ups regularly.
He explained that at most times, seeing children healthy did not necessarily mean they were healthy.
Unfortunately, there were some children who could not make it to the list because they were non-operable.
They were given antibiotics as a treatment instead.
