80% Of Fijians Suffer From Oral Diseases

In Fiji, 80 per cent of people suffer from oral diseases such as dental decay, periodontal disease and tooth loss, despite most of these being preventable.

This was highlighted by Jyotika Devi, Colgate -Palmolive (Fiji) Pte Ltd’s marketing manager, at the World Oral Health Day celebration in Suva, yesterday.

“This is according to Fiji National University (FNU) head of clinical operations at the School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Dr Vinal Harkishan,” she said.

“We know that better oral health means better overall health and well-being.

“Factors contributing to oral diseases include an unhealthy diet high in sugar, smoking, harmful use of alcohol, poor hygiene and other social determinants.”
