Selfless, Obedient Peni

As his peers enjoyed the festive atmosphere, he was helping the men and women catering to the needs of the guests on the island.

Among the celebration and hype at the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) meeting on Bau Island, a 15-year-old boy was quietly offering his assistance be­hind the scenes.

If one visited the Tunitoga’s resi­dence known as ‘Vunivau ‘, they would find Peni Rawaiwai tire­lessly assisting the women with meat preparation, aiding the men with the traditional lovo cooking or transporting pigs to be slaughtered.

While his peers enjoyed them­selves, Peni always found a way to support his grandmother, Vani Kasanikula.

His story is profoundly moving as he expressed his gratitude to his grandmother for constantly en­couraging him to give his best with­out expecting anything in return.

“I was thrilled when my grand­mother told me to get ready because we were going to Bau for the GCC meeting. She wanted us to assist in any way we could,” Peni said.
