‘BAU People United To Make GCC A Success’

Despite the time constraints, the Bau committee ensured a smooth execution of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) meeting on the island from May 23 to 25.
Turaga na Vunivalu, Tui Kaba Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, had requested the Government to host this GCC meeting after a 16-year gap.
The last meeting took place on Bau Island in 1982, where the late Queen Elizabeth II graced the event as the chief guest.
Tunitoga Aisea Komaitai, the chief herald, was grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of the meeting.
“It was not an easy task, but I thank God. The people of Kubuna united to ensure that we executed everything according to plan,” Mr Komaitai said.
“People were filled with emotions, especially after 16 years, and witnessing the meeting was a game changer for them. The meeting demonstrated teamwork, and many people remarked that it showcased solidarity among the iTaukei.”
Despite the challenges faced, Mr Komaitai expressed satisfaction with the outcome.
“Every worthwhile endeavor comes with its share of challenges. However, the meeting surpassed our expectations. Everyone wholeheartedly contributed to its success,” he said.
“We had an abundance of everything. Even after the meeting concluded, we still have resources remaining. We are grateful to God for the challenges we encountered. Every province that participated played a crucial role in the meeting’s success. Every mataki (traditional envoy) across the island provided hospitality to all our guests.”
Mr Komaitai highlighted the unity of the people of Bau in ensuring that the visitors felt welcome and at home. He also extended his gratitude to the Government for assistance.
