Close friends Vinaisi Vakacere and Imeri Lomani have triumphed over countless hurdles during their tenure as students at Sangam College of Nursing in Labasa.

Now, they are part of the group of 233 intern nurses undergoing induction, set to conclude today in Suva, before they are assigned to Sub-Divisional Hospitals across the country.

They thanked their respective families for the unwavering support.

Even in the face of adversity, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, they consistently uplifted each other’s spirits.

Vinaisi Vakacere

Vinaisi hails from Dama in Bua with maternal connections to Nacula, Yasawa, while Imeri comes from Vacalea Village, Nakasaleka in Kadavu with maternal ties to Nasealevu, Macuata.

They both take pride in being the first nurses in their respective families.

“When we initially joined, transitioning to tertiary life was challenging during the shift to online classes caused by COVID-19. However, we gradually adapted and overcame the obstacles together,” Vinaisi said.

“Joining the Student Nurses Christian Fellowship at school played a pivotal role in motivating us spiritually. We always made an effort to uplift and support each other during difficult times. I am grateful that we have come this far.”

Imeri Lomani

For Imeri, leaving home for the first time was a trying experience.

“As youngest in my family, I have always been surrounded by loved ones. Initially, it was tough to be away from home when I arrived in Labasa,” Imeri said.

“However, with time, Vinaisi and I formed a strong bond and started doing things together. Most importantly, we stood by each other during our lowest moments.

“Our friendship is something I hold dear, and reaching this stage together is a testament to how friends should support one another.

“We constantly encourage and celebrate each other’s successes. This bond we share will endure because we have learned the value of listening without judgment.”
