A successful search and rescue operation saved the life of a young American boy who was adrift at sea along the Coral Coast last week.

It was a remarkable display of unity and heroism through a combined effort by staff of Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji’s emergency response team (ERT), Hydro Sports and the National Fire Authority (NFA).

The young boy, who was part of an NGO from the United States of America, had been reported adrift at sea by the rangers at Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park earlier that afternoon when he failed to return to the park.

The local authorities were alerted immediately and a search and rescue operation was launched, with NFA, Hydro Sports and the resort taking the lead.

Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji’s general manager Francis Lee said, “we cannot understate the importance of quick thinking, teamwork and unwavering dedication in this remarkable rescue mission,” Mr Lee said.

“The NFA, Hydro Sports, and the resort have demonstrated what can be achieved when organisations come together for a common cause. Their coordinated actions undoubtedly saved a life and gave the young boy a second chance at life.”

Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji ,after receiving the call for help activated its Code Six and responded and assisted accordingly.

Hydro Sports provided invaluable support by offering the use of their watercraft and trained personnel.

The combined expertise and dedication of these three organisations paid off when the boy was spotted by the rescue team drifting more than a kilometre from the shore.

The rescue operation that followed was executed with precision and care, showing the exceptional training and teamwork of all involved.

The boy, shaken and exhausted, was safely recovered and brought back to the resort and was later taken to Sigatoka District Hospital for medical attention.
