Fiji must continue to work together with relevant stakeholders to safeguard the oceans and reduce the shipping industry’s environmental impact.

Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji Manager – Ships Inspection / OIC, Captain Sesoni Komaisoso said the shipping industry’s pollution and environmental impact are both causes of concern.

He said the shipping industry contributes to oil pollution, air pollution, and water pollution.

“According to reports, carbon dioxide emissions from shipping account for a sizable portion of global human-made emissions, which can reach dangerous levels if appropriate measures are not taken,” he said.

“Fiji’s maritime industry, like many others around the world, faces significant challenges as it strives to adapt to the changes in the global maritime landscape.”
