It was an emotional day for Kehila Morell, a student of Jai Narayan College in Suva, as she spoke about her journey of overcoming Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD).

She was part of the World Heart Day 2023 celebration on Friday.

Kehila was diagnosed with RHD in 2013 after a screening team visited the school.

The 15-year-old said symptoms such as sore joints should not be brushed aside as something that would go away on its own.

“When I was told that I had the disease, I was a bit confused because I didn’t know what RHD was,” said the Year 10 student.

“If not treated, this can lead to damage to the valves of your heart.

“Monthly injections were painful and I always get frustrated when I would be referred from one health clinic to another because the Benza injections had run out.

“I realised that the Benza medication was protecting me and it was important to take it every month. It was a good thing that Benza was provided free of charge at any health facility.

“We need to speak out and educate ourselves about the disease and seek medical attention if needed.”
