Basketball is a family affair in Fiji.

This rings true for the Koyamainavure family: Siblings Miliakere and her brother Mataika Koyamainavure are again playing in the Sol2023 Pacific Games in Honiara.

This is Miliakere’s fourth Games while it is Mataika’s third. Miliakere’s women side went down to Samoa 75-74 in their last pool match yesterday:

“It was a tough match,” she said.

“We had a lot of opportunities, but we did not convert them.

“It’s all a learning experience and this will make us come back stronger.

“It’s special playing with my brother. We’ve been playing together for a long time.

“We played in the Under-20, went to college together in the United States. Now we’re playing for Fiji and it’s always exciting to have a sibling playing also.”

The Fijian women’s side is still in the contest but it has yet to know who they will play next.

Head coach Earl Hughes told SUNsports that he was trying to get some clarification on the format.

“That is whether they’ll be in the playoff before progressing to the semifinal,” he said.

“After all the pool matches tomorrow (today) then we will know our opponent.”
