Written By : Sun Fiji Sportsdesk. Tavua soccer team started the 2008 Fiji Bitter FACT tournament with a bang when they defeated a new- look Nasinu team 2-0 at the Vodafone Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday.
Head coach Lambert Sarju was a happy man after his gutsy Goldtown team register three points in their first game of the tournament and the side is confident of their chances in the remaining matches.
“The boys really played well and they stick to the game plan but still there are some areas that need improvement.”
“We will sit and discuss tonight and see what areas that needs to be rectified before we meet Labasa tomorrow (today).”
But the Tavua team were taken to the wire by a new look Nasinu side under their new coach Rainab Singh Ali.
Ali said his young side played well despite training together for only eight days. “We have only eight days to prepare for this tournament but I think the boys will gain the confidence as the tournament progresses.” Ali said.
“We still have three games left and I am confident the boys will improve and we can upset other big teams.”
The side were locked 0-0 at halftime before Tavua came out firing after getting a lecture from their mentor.
“I told the boys at halftime to score early in the second half otherwise forget winning and I am proud they did just that.’
Crafty defender Solomoni Natau scored the first goal for Tavua in the second minute of first half and thereon the Tavua team never looks back.
They came out firing from all angles in the second spell but they failed to score points.
With only five minutes remaining Tavua defender Horace Moore scored the second goal to increase lead 2-0.
