Written By : CHRISTOPHER CHAND . Mitieli Mairewa scored Lautoka’s second try to see the Maroons claim a dramatic 10-10 draw against Sanyo Cup debutants Rewa in the opening round of the competition at Churchill Park yesterday.
The hosts were trailing 10-5 before Mairewa dotted down to help Lautoka claim two points for a draw after Rewa gave them a scare in their first match of the top tier competition.
Rewa who gained promotion after defeating Vatukoula last year has sent warning signals to all provincial teams after putting up an impressive display. Lautoka led 3-0 at halftime. Lautoka rugby secretary Samu Yalayala said the side did well to comeback into the match to earn a deserving draw.
Yalayala said the recent split in the union had affected the side in recent weeks. “It was an exciting finish and we did well to claim a draw,” Yalayala said. “The fact that we have had differences in the union disrupted their training but we are now together and this is a sign of better thing in the coming games.
“We would have had a good game had we not had bickering amongst the members. The result is a morale booster for the side going into the next round.”
Rewa who had a few pre season matches under its belt took Lautoka by surprise and were on the brink of a major upset in the opening round.
