Written By : Thakur Ranjit Singh Waitakere City, New Zealand . Recently there has been much talk in media about brain drain where the debate has been undeservingly skewed against the military which has been accused of contributing to the running away of people from Fiji.
Yes, this is true after 1987 for which Rabuka has apologised. But the media has failed to take account of 2000 when the military saved Fiji from religious fanatics and race-based fundamentalists who hijacked democracy under the guise of maintaining Fijian supremacy.
Many who are now crying for democracy and rule of law danced on the corpse of democracy and partied with the hooligans at the Veiuto complex.
With the cry of democracy, elections and rule of law, the SDL did come on board and commenced doing democratically what George Speight and the fundamentalists did illegally.
They commenced on ethnic cleansing and blatantly race-based policies that were the major cause of brain drain in six years of SDL rule.
My biggest worry is the inability of democracy to stop such a trend.
There is no guarantee if the SDL, when it comes to power again, would not complete under democratic umbrella what Mugabe is doing in Zimbabwe – to cleanse the country of those who are doing well, contributing to national economy and are envy to the native population.
I ask those calling for elections and democracy what can save democracy from SDL’s style of rule in Fiji?
Where were the international communities, European Union, the Commonwealth, United Nations, the Australia and NZ funded NGOs, the law society and other activists now jumping in front of cameras when SDL was on a rampage of ethnic cleansing, disowning a large chunk of its population and indulged in activities which were blatant breaches of human rights?
The leadership of TISI and Fiji Muslim League, who silently support the SDL type of democracy, has to answer to their people whether they still have a clear conscience to throw their people to dogs of democracy where social justice is missing from the equation.
