Written By : Sun Fiji Sportsdesk. The Fiji Women’s basketball team flew out of the country early Tuesday morning en-route to Spain for the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament.
The side ranked 58 in the world faces a mammoth task in their bid to try and win a spot at the Beijing Olympics later this year.
The team is backed by substantial funding of over $100,000 from the International Olympic Committee Solidarity programme specifically provided to assist a team sport to qualify for the Olympic Games. Additional financial support has been received by FIBA from the Fiji government through the Ministry of Sports.
The team is due to feature in first round of competition against the home team Spain on Friday, June 9.
Family and friends were on hand at the Holiday Inn to farewell the team on Monday night as they boarded their coach for Nadi Airport.
The side is captained by Mikaelar Whippy and US- based Valarie Nainima is the vice captain. The team is coached by Michael Whippy and assisted by Stuart Manwaring while Deborah Hazelman is the manager.
Also accompanying the team is Basketball Fiji’s newly appointed president Iowane Naivalurua and team physiotherapist Sharlene Nand.
