image Written By : Sun Fiji Newsroom. As I travel by bus from the Suva bus stand to school each morning, I always witness the disgusting state of our environment.
Firstly, the bus stand is littered with bean bags, banana peelings, paper, sweet wrappers and a lot more and even worse, the sputum people spit out after a loud cough.
Children with neat, clean uniforms and shiny shoes who ae ready to march into a new school day, sometimes accidentally step into it.
Once the bus takes off, heavy black smoke (carbon monoxide)is given off and no one can escape from inhaling it.
Along the roadside, dogs are seen scavenging over-filled garbage bins and the smell is unbearable. The Walu Bay Industrial area is noisy and smelly
As our bus passes Reservoir Road roundabout, one can hardly escape the odour from the river which has become a victim of oil spillage. It is not surprising that one has to hold one’s breath in that distance.
The cemetery along the road is littered with faded plastic flowers and tattered floral clothes. It is really hurting to see the final homes of our loved ones full of long paragrass.
Next is the Tamavua-i-wai river. The once crystal clear water has now become greenish black.Small organisms are lying dead among mangrove swamps,match-boxes and household items lying carelessly.
Upon entering Delainavesi road, past the old rubbish dump, the scene is an eyesore.
Supermarket plastic bags full of household garbage are scattered along the road.Dogs usually tear the bags and scavenge it,thus inviting in flies cockroaches and rats.Surely, there is a lack of national pride.
Finally, as I reach the gates of Ballantine with its lush green trees, beautiful flower gardens, decorated classrooms and fancy poy plants,my mood changes.I pray that the whole nation will follow my school the way the Environment Committee has taught us.
I extend my big Vinaka Vakalevu to them for teaching us about our environment, our effort and our responsibility.
