Written By : Peter Waqavonovono Suva. As a young person and a citizen of Fiji, I am disgusted with the claims that teachers and school managers of Valebosoga Secondary School in Labasa abused and drove a student to emotional distress resulting in her suicide.
This is an issue that hits hard and strikes a sensitive nerve on many levels. We as young people continue to face many abuses and inhumane restrictions in our schools. This is unfair and a violation of our rights stipulated in the 1997 Constitution.
Teachers and executives who practically, emotionally and physically tormented Shereen Khan for befriending a Hindu male are ridiculous and barbaric.
Schools such as Valebosoga who have strayed from their original purposes as centres of learning and sanctuaries of knowledge have now become places of distress, pain and much hate.
I feel that it is time we started as a nation to call for schools to become student-friendly and respect the rights of their students.
This is also a reason why the provision of counselors should be mandatory in all our schools. I hope that this is a death and situation we can learn from.
