The decision by the interim government to stop any further increase in electricity charges comes as a relief for consumers.
It comes a day after the Commerce Commission had approved an increase in fuel surcharge rate to the Fiji Electricity Authority. It would have meant that consumers could be paying more for their power bills from next week.
While the Commission maintains its independence and says it does not have to consult the State about any fuel surcharge rate hike, it is not the right time to burden consumers further with more price increases. Most consumers are already up to their necks in bills on basic items especially food and water.
They just do not need more right now.
