Written By : Sun Fiji Sportsdesk. The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union is confident of a good year after they secured a sponsor for their competition.
Coca-Cola Amatil (Fiji) Limited would be signing a sponsorship deal with FSSRU soon.
This was yesterday confirmed by Coca- Cola corporate affairs, overseas business and sponsorship manager, Lawrence Tikaram.
“We haven’t done the official launch but it will be named as the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby competition,” he said.
Coca- Cola is the official sponsor of the secondary school athletics meet which is considered as one of the biggest school event in the world.
FSSRU administration officer, Taione Vunicagi yesterday said they were grateful to the company for their sponsorship.
“We are grateful to Coca-Cola for its kind sponsorship at a time when the current political climate is not conducive to the business environment.”
The sponsorship by Coca- Cola will see the increase in zones from four to eight which also means the increase in schools.
“The schools participation number has increased from 60 to 125.
“The new zones are Baravi, North 1, Maritime and Taveuni.”
Vunicagi said the zones will be divided into tier 1 and tier 2.
This would see tier one zones made up of top teams from, Southern Zone, Eastern Zone and West 2.
“Tier 2 group include teams from Baravi, North 1, Taveuni and Maritime.”
Vunicagi added the tier 1 competition would battle for the Coke Zero Deans Cup whilst the Tier 2 battles for the Coke Zero FSSRU cup.
Vunicagi also stated the new format would ensure that 96 out of 125 schools make it into the quarters.
The quarterfinals is expected to be held at the National Stadium on August1-2, the semis would be held the following week at Lautoka and the final on August 15-16 at the national stadium.
