Written By : VUNIWAQA BOLA. Utility back Marika Vakacegu joined the Flying Fijians camp yesterday as coach Ilivasi Tabua makes the final changes before the game against Samoa.
The England based-player was earlier named in the Fiji Warriors squad, a shadow team for the International Rugby Board Pacific Nations Cup.
Flying Fijians coach, Ilivasi Tabua yesterday confirmed Vakacegu’s inclusion.
Vakacegu has been called in to cover for Stormers wing, Sireli Naqelevuki since France based- Maleli Kunavore is tied up with club commitments.
“We took him in looking at positions he could cover,” Tabua said.
Tabua said although Crusaders’ winger Vima Tuidraki has been doing well, Vakacegu could cover for the wing, centre and fullback’s berth.
“We already have a lot of wingers here.
“There is Delasau, Michael Tagicakibau and Naqusa.”
Vakacegu would join Tailevu’s Saula Radidi, who was also called in to cover for Kunavore.
“Saula can play at centre or second.”
Tabua said anyone player that excels in his position would be reviewed by him and the selectors.
He also confirmed that they would review Naqelevuki when he gets into the country sometime today.
Tabua gave his players time to rest from their long training sessions.
“We can’t overload the players. Everyone has had a long season and even the local boys have been playing for 13 weeks without rest.”
Tabua said the players needed time to recover to help their body function to carry the demand.
Meanwhile, Tabua said he is focused on the Pacific Nations Cup and the game they have in front of them.
“My focus is on 15s and the last thing on my mind now is 7s.”
“I don’t want to worry about sevens,” he added.
