Written By : CHRISTOPHER CHAND . Lautoka’s golden boot Sailesh ‘Bula’ Sami will lead United Sangam in the Islands Electric Gandhi 7-a-side tournament in Nadi tomorrow.
The pint-size strike weapon will boost his home side as they gun for the lucrative $300 first prizemoney.
Bula, who had scored three crucial goals in the Fiji Bitter FACT for his Blues outfit, will play a dual role.
The 31-year old is the coach/player of the Lautoka club side who finished as runners up in the local league last season.
Gandhi soccer boss Mahendra Raj said United Sangam would be one of the top guns in the two-day event. Raj said they hope to hold the tournament annually due the overwhelming response.
“United Sangam is in one of the tough pools and it will be interesting to see how the Lautoka club will fair against Nadi clubs in Pool B,” Raj said.
“This is the first time ever we are holding this tournament and with the number of teams that have entered the competition we will surely look to make it an annual event in our calendar.
“Our sponsors Islands Electric has been very supportive and despite the harsh economic times, Raymond Singh has come forward to help us.”
Ba based Tavarau is the top seed in Pool A with Qeleloa, Nakia, Transmitter and Tappoos. Hosts Gandhi leads the race for the semi finals from Pool B which also has United Sangam, Korovuto, Combine Brothers and Kennedy Boys.
Waiyavi Heights is another tournament favourite and they lead Pool C with Salovi, Namaka, International and Gandhi II while Malolo, Navakai, Blues, K. Bread and Avis make up the last group.
Islands Electric boss Singh said the tournament is the first of its kind.
Singh said being a small business they have always supported the development of sports at the grassroots level.
“It’s a great initiative to help club level soccer and we are proud to support the tournament,” Singh said.
