Written By : MACIU MALO . Former national rep and Digicel 7s selector Jope Tuikabe believes Josateki Savou should be retained to coach the national 7s team for the 7s Rugby World Cup in Dubai next year.
Tuikabe says it’s better for Savou to continue coaching the team since he has been developing many players during the series and he knows what kind of players needed for the Melrose Cup defence.
“Jo should be given another chance to coach Fiji at the world cup in Dubai,”Tuikabe said.
“He developing new players during the series and he know what to expect from them.”
Under Savou’s reign, Fiji lost all the IRB titles they won during the 2007/2008 series and Fiji has recorded the heaviest defeat of all time at the Hong Kong 7s history in the hands of the All Blacks when they were hammered 34-0.
Despite Savou’s unfavorable record at this year’s IRB 7s series, Tuikabe still believes that the world cup will be a different scenario altogether for Savou and his players.
“Even though we failed to win any particular tournament, I think Fiji is always dangerous come rugby world cup.”
“We may have lost all the IRB tournaments but the Fiji team is different in any world cup especially with the return of many prominent players like Naqelevuki, Bolavucu,Naevo and Daunivucu.”
“Most of these top players are unavailable because of club commitments but they can be released to play for Fiji at the world cup.”
