Written By : Sun Fiji Sportsdesk. Star Rewa striker Kamal Hassan was the toast of the national team last night scoring two crucial goals to help Fiji seal an important 4-2 win over New Caledonia in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Futsal Championship.
Employing a defensive tactic, Fiji fell behind early in the game before Sandeep Nair equalised to tie the scores 1-1 at halftime.
Navua’s rugged defender Siga Ali put Fiji in front early in the second half before New Caledonia drew level again.
Fiji team’s vice-captain Kamal was tireless throughout the encounter and restored the lead before scoring Fiji’s fourth seconds before fulltime.
Fiji coach Intiaz Khan said he was happy with the positive start.
“A good result for us from the first game. We are positive and let’s see how things go for us in the next game. We went in with a defensive approach and were strong in counter attacks.’’
“The boys played to the pace I wanted. We managed to control the game but there is room for improvement in our defence,’’ he said.
Khan said Fiji was wary of its next opponent Solomon Islands whom the side will play on Tuesday night.
“We are not playing tomorrow (today) so the whole team will be here to see how Solomon Island team plays,’’ he said.Rosso Alexandre and Hnailolo Albert scored for New Caledonia.
