Written By : Allen Lockington Lautoka . Vatukoula is in dire straits.
But thanks to Save the Children Fund there will be some relief as $100,000 will be pumped in to pay for schools fees and books.
Having lived in Vatukoula for just a few months, it is very noticeable to see able bodied men and women and children being idle.
Life has been a struggle for them.
People from all provinces in Fiji live in Vatukoula.
It is not a town or a registered village that is governed by a structured organisation.
In the past it was the management of the gold mine who were the administration, so to speak.
And they did a fantastic job of it.
Sadly after they left, a once vibrant community collapsed.
I asked a few people how they survived and they said many of them turned back to farming and were living from day to day.
Save the Children Fund will be pumping in much needed relief but the money will not last forever.
What the people of Vatukoula need is something that will last, maybe forever.
The present government has in its power to do this.
It has been dictating terms and it can dictate that the next biscuit or oil or flour factory is set up there.
There is so much we can do yet all we do is talk.
We have been talking long and hard about how to revive Vatukoula, if we talk long enough we can set to a wind factory there which can turn turbines to generate electricity.
But seriously we have the solutions it’s only for those in power to make it work.
On the other hand Levuka will go the same way with the deregulation of the tinned-fish industry.
And it was all our own fault.
