Written By : MOIZ MUNIF. Ba Sangam College started their campaign on a high note after beating Kamil College 2-1 in the Fiji Sun U17 Ba Secondary Schools Football competition yesterday.
Apimaleki Nasema goal gave his side the lead in the first spell. Apete Kornivalau scored a crucial goal in second half to seal the close win at Govind Park in Ba.
“We are very pleased to win our first game and we are hoping for a similar result against DAV College on Friday,” coach Manoj Kumar said.
Kumar who is also the president of Ba secondary school association believes the team will do wonders despite the limited training time that they have had. He said that the team would make the top four.
“I’m sure that we will make the semifinal of this competition,” Kumar said.
“The boys train after school because we do not want sports to clash with their academic work. But in training they are giving their 100 per cent and working really hard. A lot of players from this school have turned out to be good districts reps like Shamil Rao (Ba) and Krishna Sami (Suva),” he said.
Khalsa College will now take on Ba Sanatan College today at 2.30pm which will be followed by the Xavier College versus AD Patel College encounter at 3.10pm. Xavier College currently leads the race from Pool A for a spot in the semifinals after AD Patel College and Khalsa College played to a 1-1 draw.
The second round of Pool B will be played tomorrow which sees DAV College meet Ba Sangam College at 2.30pm. This game will decide the winner and runner of pool B. Meanwhile in Lautoka Andhra Sangam College will play Natabua High School in the semifinals of the Fiji Sun U17 Lautoka Secondary Schools competition after thrashing Central College 3-0 yesterday.
In the other semifinal Drasa Secondary School will meet Tilak High School. In the win over Central College, former Lautoka striker Watisoni Voli’s son Rusiate Matirega scored the opener, Waisiki Ravouvou grabbed a brace.
“It was a good win for the school and the team has worked hard to get here. We have made it three wins in a row and I’m very proud. The school principal Anand Balraman who is new to the school this year has put his support behind the team,” said coach Adarsh Sharma.
