Former All Black Piri Weepu has already warned his troops to be ready for the flamboyant Fijians who love running rugby.
Weepu who is one of the four All Blacks in the side believes the Maoris will have to be on the lookout for star Fijian players and to find their weak spots.
“They showed last year what they are made of especially at the World Cup so they are not a team we going to take lightly and no matter what number they got on their back most of those boys in their team are pretty quick so we got to keep our eyes out on the good boys and hopefully shut them down,” Weepu said.
“We are capable of analyzing what each player in the (Fijian) backline is capable of and making sure that we know what their skills are and what their strengths are and try and find what their weaknesses are.”
New Zealand Maori coach Donny Stevenson said they will have to counter the Fijians free flowing game by taking the battle to the forwards.
Stevenson said if they play into Fiji’s open game then they will lose the plot with the likes of Vilimoni Delasau in the backline.
“We know the dangers Fiji represent in terms of how they like to counter attack and run the ball from anywhere so we are well aware of the threat from the Fiji team,” Stevenson said.
“We know if we turn over a lot of balls against Fiji who with the likes of Delasau and them, we can get really hurt so we got to make sure we keep hold of the ball.”
The New Zealand Maoris were forced to grind out a win over Tonga 20-9 last week and the side hopes to raise the bar against the national side.
