Written By : CHRISTOPHER CHAND. Fiji can beat the New Zealand Maoris despite the odds stacked against the national side, says wing cum centre Sireli Naqelevuki.
Naqelevuki who has rubbed shoulders against the elite Maoris in the Super 14 competition said, Fiji has to keep the visitors on the back foot all the time.
He said the national side’s flair and aggressiveness could grind out an important win on Saturday.
“We can beat them and if we tackle them back in defence then we have a good chance of winning,” he said.
“I’ve always looked up to them but when you believe in yourself and try to play against them, you will know that we have a chance of beating them because with the Stormers we had beaten some big teams like the Hurricanes. It’s a good feeling once you have won because for many here at home they only see these players on television.
“We have to believe in ourselves and we have to take the game to them when they come forward and we should tackle them back so that they don’t gain momentum once they do they love attacking.”
The Kadavu native who has been shifted back to his favoured outside centre position for the Flying Fijians was in the Stormers side that defeated Piri Weepu’s Hurricanes 20-12 and co-captain Liam Messam’s Chiefs 35-26 in the Super 14 competition
The core of the New Zealand Maoris side consists of players from the five New Zealand Super 14 franchise teams.
“The players need to play to the best of their ability and we will only win if the players believe in themselves,” Naqelevuki added.
Fiji last defeated the Maoris in 1957 however the last time the two sides met at Churchill Park in 1954 the national side romped home to a 19-12 win.
The Flying Fijians face the Maoris at 3pm on Saturday.
