Written By : Sainiana Waqainabete Principal Media Officer Ministry of Works and Transport . I refer to an article with the headline “Motorists complain of no road markings” (FS 11/6).
Your reporter had requested my comment on the problems faced by motorists at a particular roundabout on Fletcher Road in Vatuwaqa. She said the island at this roundabout was not painted thus was a risk to motorists.
She sought my response on whether the Ministry of Works and Transport was aware of the issue and what action would be taken to correct it.
I responded that this particular road fell under the ambits of the Suva City Council but that the ministry was available to assist because it was a matter of safety for the travelling public.
We could paint the island or even construct a traffic light at the site if the SCC brought it to our attention.
I was disappointed that the reporter quoted me stating that the Ministry would only act if the public forwarded their complaints to us. It was totally different from what I had told her and she eliminated crucial facts .
The ministry maintains it is committed to ensuring that public safety is paramount and we will gladly step in to assist provided the proper channels are followed to eliminate duplication of work or stepping on toes.
