Written By : CHRISTOPHER CHAND. New Zealand Maoris co-captain Liam Messam is aware of the national sides free-flowing game after facing the likes of William Ryder and Semisi Naevo on the IRB sevens circuit.
The former sevens star has since transformed into a lethal ball hunter with the Chiefs in the Super 14 this season and is one of the most important members of the Maori lineup.
Messam said they have picked up their game after the match against Tonga and will be ready for Fiji.
He said the Maoris will have to stop the Fijians from finding their wings.
“They are a very good team and they have a lot of flair and talent, its going to be a hard game for the boys,” Messam said.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge for us but I think the boys are ready to play the Fijians. We have had a look at our game after the Tongans and we take a lot of confidence from that going into this week.”
The versatile flanker who was the player of the tournament during the Churchill Cup last year will face Fiji in the full code for the first time in his career.
The former sevens skipper who was part of New Zealand’s Commonwealth gold medal winning team has had his battled against the national side in the abbreviated code.
In 2004, Messam at only 20 guided New Zealand to their fifth IRB series title and lost to Fiji in the 2005 sevens World Cup which included current reps Semisi Naevo, Iferemi Rawaqa, Vilimoni Delasau.
Tamati Ellison is the other co-captain and he will lead a fired up backline that has had five changes after the Tonga match.
