The Pacific Nations Cup still uses the aged old regulations with the ELV’s expected to arrive in the region not until August.
New Zealand Maoris coach Donny Stevenson said the ELV’s allowed a free running game compared to the old laws.
Stevenson said the bulk of the players in his squad have had to do some fine-tuning after being exposed to the ELV’s this season.
“We queried them (players) about that (laws) and they said it did take some adjusting especially in terms of the backline how they used to operating five meters back from the scrum so they haven’t had that room to move,” Stevenson said.“They had to make adjustments there and I think just adjusting to the pace of the game now, under the ELVs there was a lot of freekicks and the game was flowing so they had to make a couple of adjustments and hopefully they will get used to the old rules again.”
The lack of preparation time and being thrown back into the old system was probably a huge ask for some of the players.
The Maoris were locked 3-3 against Tonga at halftime and had to score two tries in the second half to escape the wrath of the friendly islanders.
“Every coach needs more time we are all in the same boat I think after that first week against Tonga we needed abit more time we have had a few days from here on,” Stevenson said.
“It will be about how we prepare and we have had a training run today (yesterday) and a captains run tomorrow (today) and so if we don’t nail it then, then we don’t have any excuses.”
