Written By : Sun Fiji Sportsdesk. New Zealand Maori duo Stephen Brett and Tamati Ellison are targeting a call-up into the All Blacks squad for the upcoming Tri-Nations should they impress in the Pacific Nations Cup.
The pair along with former All Blacks Daniel Braid, Jason Eaton, Ross Filipo and Piri Weepu were left out of the test matches against Ireland and England.
Chiefs flanker and New Zealand Maori co-captain Liam Messam together with Hurricanes winger Hosea Gear are the other notable players in the side.A strong performance could earn them a ticket in Graham Henry’s All Black list.
New Zealand Maori coach Donny Stevenson said the players in his side are out to don the prestigious All Black jumper.
“We have got a pretty strong team and we have some good boys coming through that we want to push for All Black colours like Stephen Brett and Tamati Ellison,” Stevenson said.
Last week the Maoris were given an early fright after they were confronted by the fiery Tongans.
Stevenson said they will have to improve on a number of facets of the game against Fiji.
He said the scrums and the lineouts would be one area for them to target.
“Tonga played pretty physically and then we sat back and watched Fiji score a very good win over Samoa but it was very close game and very physical game against Tonga,” Stevenson said.
“We let ourselves down in some areas in our set piece and we turned over a lot of ball.
“We like to back our scrum that’s the foundation for any attack a good set piece the scrum and lineout we will be working on that.”
