Fiji is currently ranked ninth after their magical world cup performance but they are breathing down Ireland’s neck this weekend.
A win for Fiji and a loss for the Irish against the Wallabies will move the national side above the European giants this weekend.
National coach Ilivasi Tabua said the side is more concerned about the match against the New Zealand Maoris.
Tabua said they would not want to focus on the IRB rankings with the Maoris standing in their way.
“We are not really worried about (IRB ranking) that, the focus is coming to the game and doing what we want to do and the results will come. Last week we proved that we can score tries but we need to defend well,” Tabua said.
A top eight ranking among the Tier One nations will be Fiji’s best rating in the world of rugby.
The national side’s heroics after defeating Wales 38-34 at the World Cup last year saw them jump from 11th to ninth place.
Fiji has been in the top 10 for the first time since 2005.
While the national sides devastating 34-17 win over Samoa did little to change their world ranking last week it will carry a lot of weight this weekend.
World champions South Africa remains the top team with New Zealand in second place.
Argentina is third followed by Australia in fourth place and England in fifth spot.
Wales is in sixth place after winning the Six Nations and France in seventh.
The national side faces the New Zealand Maoris at 3pm in Lautoka tomorrow.
