Written By : Joe Gonewai Suva. There is a lot of debate on a common identity for people who reside in Fiji. Some have suggested to call us all Fiji Islanders and Fijians for the natives. Others want everyone to be called Fijians and Taukei for the natives similar to the Kanaks of New Caledonia.
So if they want Fijian to be part of their identity, they need to know the Fijian language, culture, traditional values, religion. Those who leave to live in other countries have to learn and practise the language and culture of their new home. The same should apply to Fiji otherwise there will always be resistance to the idea.
