Written By : E Roko Tailevu. I wish to ask Savu villagers (mahogany owners) in Tailevu who has given their mahogany to contractors the following questions. How many trucks operating on the vanua land belong to Fijians?
If some, how many are for people from Tailevu?
How many belong to the peopke of Vugalei?
How many belongs to the people of Savu?
Who has so far benefited from the mahogany logging?
If one honestly answers all these, one will know where we are heading.
I can say that the amount of mahogany taken to the mills is wasted. Th harvest of the mahogany on our land has not brought any changes to our lives.
Savu villagers still struggle and every Saturday travel to the market to sell their farm produce to earn their living.
The villagers own the land but their money is taken by Fiji Hardwood and the subcontractors. Mahogany will not be there forever. I urge the villagers to think and do something before it is too late.
